"Prepare to be taken down to the deep, dark recesses of the manmade megalith that is the industrial rock quarry. Turns out it’s not actually as spooky and soot-filled as we might imagine – in fact it’s a thing of wonder, full of infinite ladders, sunlit stone facades and pools of liquid turquoise. “It is difficult to transmit on film the personal experience…one feels and observes at these immense and torn sites,” says Mouraz of his two-year project in Portugal. And while he may decry a photograph’s ability to convey the total picture, I’d say he’s done an immense job capturing the sheer scale of our excavations into the earth’s crust."
